Show Review

Review Their agility in finding significance in a throwaway remark is astonishing, and while some of what Shale revealed is obviously irresistible, other parts spurred feats of creative sympathy. His first kisses (with two girls) backstage during a high-school Yeoman of the Guard prompts an instant pastiche of Gilbert & Sullivan, but his father’s farewell to his hairpiece becomes an affecting moment of puppetry as the wig dejectedly stumbles away.

Since the revelations come from the guest none is likely to be truly painful — but why should we want them to be? The point of the show is to display the marvel of improv, and Lifegame certainly does this.

Show Review

Review The fascination for the guest lies in seeing their memories brought to life in front of them, a joyful, but rather strange, out-of-body experience, if Shale’s reactions are anything to go by. The fascination for the audience lies in observing the skill of the improvisation team in conjuring up the scenarios and in watching the interplay between them and the guest. And the team is both deft and daft: they delivered the circumstances of Shale’s first kiss as a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta.

The show stands or falls, in part, by the nature of the guest: Shale was charming, open and willing to take part in certain scenes. And some of the improvisations work better than others. But there is something very touching and life-affirming about seeing the ordinary details of an individual life celebrated in this way. Certainly on this occasion, Lifegame proved a warm, vivid and finally unexpectedly moving show.

Show Review

Review Improbable’s techniques can elicit wildly variable responses. They may be thrillingly raw or just plain dull. A few delightful moments notwithstanding, I wasn’t especially engaged by the performance I witnessed. It seemed too slow — its transitions sluggish — and the psychological insights were underwhelming. It felt as though a more condensed format would have worked better.

Yet it’s impossible not to absorb the charm of the idea behind Lifegame and to be fascinated by its possibilities. Each instalment is a feat of alchemy and therefore unpredictable. Lifegame is thus a highly suggestive embodiment of every theatregoer’s familiar but pungent sense that, once the lights go down, things could go wrong at any moment and may never go quite right.
