General Questions About Reviews & Ratings

What is the difference between an Editor and a Member?

Editors are people with a track record of theatre criticism. They include:

  • Established new media critics (e.g. theatre bloggers)
  • Established traditional critics from traditional media
  • UpTheWestEnd.com members who have contributed consistently for at least two months.

Everyone else's reviews appear under Member Reviews and Member Ratings.

Who are the editors?

Those who have so far signed up as editors are:

Honorary members are The Guardian, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Independent, The Evening Standard, Financial Times, Sunday Express and Daily Mail.

Can I be upgraded to an Editor?

Yes! If you meet one of the criteria above. Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . If you haven't been contributing from two months, then just stick around until you do.

Who puts the newspaper/magazine review summaries up?

We do. It's quite a job.

Are the newspaper/magazines directly involved in UpTheWestEnd.com?

Not at all. We summarise their reviews and link back to the full, original review and trust that they won't mind. In the unlikely event that anyone wants us to desist, we will of course.

Why aren't all newspaper/magazines listed?

Either because they don't put their reviews online (in which case we wouldn't be able to link to the full review) or because they don't award star ratings. Only reviews that use a five star rating system are eligible. It's a maths thing.

My newspaper/magazine/whatever meets those criteria so why isn't it included?

Venue Owners' Questions

Can you list my theatre?

Yes, if it's in Central London and hosts theatrical stuff. Better still, you can list it yourself. Go to "Add a venue" under "Venues".

My theatre isn't in central London but then neither is the Lyric, Hammersmith and you've included them.

That's my theatre and you've got the details wrong!

You can keep control of the information about your theatres by "claiming" it. This would make you the owner of the venue listing and you would be able to keep it up date, add new pictures etc yourself.

To claim a venue:

1. Register using your work email address (that of the theatre or a body representing it)

2. Find your venue on the site

3. Click on the button just below the name of the theatre towards the top of the page.

4. Briefly explain your relationship with the theatre and leave the rest to us.

Producers' Questions

Can you list my show?

Yes, providing it's running (a) at a central London venue and (b) for at least one week. Better still, you can list your own show (providing the venue is already listed) by selecting the "Submit a new show" option the "Shows" menu.
